RACHMANINOV SYMPHONY NO. 2
in a new orchestration by Iain Farrington
The 2015-16 Season closes with Rachmaninov's crowning achievement. The Kantanti Ensemble makes its debut at The Conservatoire, Blackheath, and performs at its regular home in Lewes, with one of the most emotionally powerful symphonies in the repertoire.
After the utter disaster of Rachmaninov's First Symphony (whose premiere was conducted, drunk, by fellow composer Alexander Glazunov), Rachmaninov fell into a state of depression. It took many months of counselling and laborious revisions to his Second Symphony before his compositional confidence was restored. The premiere of his Second Symphony was a triumph and has remained a staple of the orchestral repertoire ever since.
